What Do We Understand by Sin?

Sin is disobedience to the law God has given us. James 4:17 teaches that if we know the right thing to do but fail to do it, we sin. God’s law helps us distinguish right from wrong.

Our flesh naturally leans toward sin. Even children often do what they are told not to. As adults, we also feel drawn to the forbidden. If we see a button labeled “Do Not Press,” curiosity tempts us to press it.

The same happened in the Garden of Eden. God commanded Adam and Eve not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, yet that was the very tree the devil used to tempt them. The forbidden fruit always appears desirable.

Romans 7:14-20 explains that even when we know what is right, our flesh still craves sin. But thank God for Jesus! He faced every temptation yet remained without sin (Hebrews 4:15), proving that we don’t have to remain slaves to sin.

What Does Sin Do to Us?

1. Sin Separates Us from God

After Adam and Eve sinned, God still came to meet them, but they hid from Him. Likewise, when we sin, guilt causes us to withdraw from God.

2. Sin Enslaves Us (John 8:34)

Romans 6:12-13 warns that when sin controls us, we follow our body’s evil desires. Our actions, words, and thoughts become instruments of wickedness.

How Did Jesus Rescue Us from Sin?

Matthew 1:21 reveals that Jesus was born to save us from sin. Before He came, we were trapped in sin with no escape.

Romans 5:10-11 explains that sin made us enemies of God. Because He is holy, our sin separated us from Him. But Jesus came to restore our broken relationship with the Father.

As our mediator (Hebrews 12:14, 1 Timothy 2:5), Jesus intercedes for us, seeking the Father’s forgiveness on our behalf. He also became the ultimate sacrifice for our sins, dying on the cross so we might live righteously (1 Peter 2:24). Nothing we do can atone for our sins—only the blood of Jesus can bring true forgiveness.

What Should We Do When We Realize We Have Sinned?

When we recognize our sin, we must confess it instead of hiding it (Proverbs 28:13). God is merciful and willing to forgive us (1 John 1:9).

However, His grace is not a license to sin. Hebrews 10:26-27 warns that if we deliberately continue sinning after knowing the truth, judgment awaits.

Final Thoughts: Our Choices

Romans 6:16 presents us with a choice: slavery to sin or slavery to obedience. If we choose sin, it leads to death. If we choose obedience, it leads to eternal life.

What will you choose today? Slavery to sin or obedience to God?

It is a concise lesson but yet a powerful message. This is very good for teens and youngster class.
