God created man to have fellowship with Him. From the beginning, His desire was for mankind to walk closely with Him, to know Him, and to live in His presence.
But the devil has always tried to create separation between God and man.
The Deception in the Garden
In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve were given one command: they were not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God warned them that if they ate from it, they would surely die.
But the devil came with deception. He questioned God’s command and then went a step further by directly contradicting God’s Word, saying that they would not die. Instead, he claimed that their eyes would be opened and they would become like God.
When Adam and Eve ate the fruit, they did not fall dead immediately.
Does that make God a liar?
Absolutely not.
The Consequence of Sin
The day they ate the fruit, they experienced spiritual death. Their sin created separation between them and God.
Before this, they enjoyed close fellowship with God. But after they sinned, they hid from Him. They were no longer living in the same innocence, closeness, and fellowship they once enjoyed. Eventually, they were driven out of the garden they had been placed in to care for.
Physical death also entered the world that day. Although they did not die physically in that very moment, the process of death had begun. Because of sin, death became part of human life.
Delayed Consequences Are Still Consequences
This teaches us an important truth: the consequences of sin may not always be immediate.
Sometimes we may not see the effects right away. The results may appear after days, months, or even years. But delayed consequences do not make God’s warnings untrue.
Every warning in the Bible is true, and we must take God’s Word seriously.
The Devil Still Deceives Today
The devil did not stop with Adam and Eve. He even tried to tempt and deceive Jesus in the wilderness. And he still tries to deceive us today.
His goal remains the same: to create distance between us and God.
He may try to convince us that sin is small, harmless, or insignificant. But no sin is worth separation from God. We must be alert, spiritually prepared, and rooted in God’s truth.
Questions to Reflect On
So we must ask ourselves:
Are we on guard at all times?
Are we equipped to fight the devil’s deception?
Do we understand the heart and mind of God through His Word?
Final Thought
The devil is a liar, but God’s Word is truth.
Let us hold firmly to what God has spoken and stay close to Him.
